ParkMobile Data Breach Exposes Licence Plates, Phone Numbers of 21M Users

A security breach at the parking app exposed email addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers, and more

A security breach at ParkMobile has exposed the personal data of 21 million customers. ParkMobile is used across North America, including here in New Orleans. The data breach included customer email addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers, mailing addresses, dates of birth, and hashed passwords.

According to ParkMobile, a notification regarding the breach was sent out on March 26th but did not include details regarding what data was stolen - saying only that “no sensitive data or Payment Card Information” was stolen. However, the company has now confirmed that license plate numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses, and vehicle nicknames were included in the data breach. In addition, there is no information regarding the breach on the ParkMobile website, and the notification is not included in a list of recent company press releases.

When asked why the company did not do more to inform users of the security breach, ParkMobile only stated that they have launched an investigation into the breach and that the investigation is ongoing.

“We immediately launched an investigation with the assistance of a leading cybersecurity firm to address the incident,” the company stated. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have also notified the appropriate law enforcement authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and we are limited in the details we can provide at this time.”

Curiously, ParkMobile has not opted to force users to change their passwords - which may now be compromised - as a precautionary measure. There is also no messaging on the app letting users know that this step should be taken as soon as possible. Users who use their ParkMobile password on other websites will want to change their passwords there as well.
